Indonesia has been recognized as a bargain destination for a decade, and there’s no reason that it will change in 2011. Resort islands like Bali are easy to reach, and although the country is popular with Australians, most Americans don’t realize how much Indonesia has to offer. “It’s a whole chain of islands and it’s got everything: beaches, diving, mountains and culture” said Tim Leffel, author of The World’s Cheapest Destinations: 21 Countries Where Your Money is Worth a Fortune ($14.95, Booklocker.com Inc.).
As an archipelagic country, Indonesia is an endless chain of wonders. From popular destinations such as Bali or Yogyakarta, to more secluded getaways such as Raja Ampat or Derawan, the splendors of the country are found almost everywhere. Accommodations and transportations also vary, making every destination affordable both for backpackers and luxury travelers.
Tim Leffel said that when problems put a nation in the headlines, tourists often shun the whole region — even when it’s perfectly safe. “You can get a deal of a lifetime,” he said. Far from resenting foreign presence, local business owners are glad to have visitors filling hotels and restaurants. Other countries included on the list are: Mexico, Nepal, Honduras, Vietnam, Greece, Ireland, Ethiopia, and the U.S.A.
